![]() ![]() I feel like its such an incredible way to be fully enveloped in the story without being caught up on pronunciation or flow of the writing style- in other words it takes the work out of it for a lazy soul like myself. I drive for a living so I've been able to enjoy so many of his stories this way in the past couple of years while at work! I've been listening to a majority of the King books and still consider myself a "constant reader". Honestly though, storytelling both pre-dates and eclipses written text so far as humanity is concerned, so the text snobs can go pound rocks :) I get the sense sometimes of a current of "reader-snobbishness" attached to audiobooks because they make a lot of texts more accessible to a wider audience that doesn't have to "work" as much to receive it. Had I listened to the audiobook first however, my own views on the character would likely have never arisen, being colored by the performance rather than just the text. Still, that did not invalidate my earlier take on him either, and when I think about the character I have both versions competing in my head. Suddenly, this character I thought I knew so well became much more sympathetic because of the way the lines were delivered, and I considered him in an entirely new light. On the one hand, I have read "The Lord of the Rings" literally 20+ times since I was a kid, but I radically re-evaluated my idea of who Denethor was after hearing his dialogue delivered via narration in the audio version. You are hearing the way someone else interprets every character and line in the story rather than the way you might, which is simultaneously wonderful and terrible in different ways. Nevertheless make no mistake it is absolutely a different medium with a different way of appreciating the story. In truth, I always loved being read to, and still remember fondly the times when my grade school teachers would read to the class. I was always an avid, lifelong reader, but demands on my time made audiobooks a necessary alternative that I fell in love with.
